The iPhone is a great alarm clock, and there are a number of free and paid apps that enhance the built in clock. The problem is that unless it's plugged in, the battery drains down and you start the day with a 50% battery (or less). You can buy one of the various speaker units that have built in cradles, but a cheap way to do it is the Kensington Nightstand. It keeps your phone at an angle for easy viewing, and even has a free app. Here's a good review in the November issue of MacLife.
